England coach Gareth Southgate announced on Tuesday his resignation from his post after his team’s defeat in the final of the 2024 European Championship against Spain, the second consecutive defeat for the English team in the final of the continental tournament.
Southgate said in a statement: “As a proud Englishman, I have been honoured to play forEngland and serve as their manager. It meant everything to me, and I did my best.”
“But it’s time for change, the beginning of a new chapter. Sunday’s European Championship final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.”
Southgate’s resignation as England manager came after eight years in charge.
Southgate led England to the Euro 2024 final, losing 2-1 to Spain on Sunday.
